Edible Campfire

To teach your Beavers the basics of campfire preparation, building, and safety, make this craft into am indoor party. Help the Beavers build their own "fire", and have fun at the same time.

Materials

  • napkins
  • paper cups to fill with "water"(7-up...)
  • Cheerios
  • Shredded coconut
  • Straight Pretzels
  • Cheesies
  • Cinnamon Hearts
  • red string licorice to break into smaller pieces
  • one toothpick per Beaver

How To

  • Each Beaver unfolds his or her napkin and lays it flat on the table. (This represents the clearing that needs to be done, to make an area safe, so the Beaver can build the fire. Here you may go into as much detail as you feel the Beavers are ready for.)
  • Make a ring of Cheerios. (Again, you may want to pause to talk about safety. Check out Information Resources at the bottom of the page for more points of safety.)
  • For the Beavers, make three piles of firewood: coconut for tinder, pretzels for kindling, and cheesies for the logs.
  • Before you lay the fire you need a cup of "water". (This represents the safety aspect of firelighting)
  • In the middle of the Cheerio ring lay an 'A' or a 'V' of logs (check for wind direction)
  • Lay tinder again the crossbar of the 'A' or 'V'
  • As each Beaver is ready they get a toothpick for the match (Can take a small piece of red string licorice and put it on the end of the toothpick to represent the match) Beaver holds the "match" under the largest pile of tinder
  • Drop a few cinnamon hearts (small pieces of licorice) on top of the fire to show that it is burning brightly (With just one match)
  • As the first log burns the Beavers can place more kindling and logs on the fire
  • Once the fire is approved by a Scouter the Beavers can eat!

Squisharoos

Materials

  • 1 pkg of Jell-O, any flavor
  • 24 large marshmellows
  • large ziploc bag

How To

  • Empty jello powder into a large plastic bag
  • Moisten marshmellows with water and shake 3 to 4 at a time in jello to coat

Tip

To make them more fun cut marshmallows into fun shapes by flattening slightly and cutting with small cutters

Spider Cookies

Materials

  • Mallow Cookie - chocolate covered marshmallow cookie with biscuit base
  • Black licorice string - 8 pc at 6 cm each
  • Black licorice string - 2 pc at 2 cm each
  • 2 miniature marshmallows

How To

  • Use a toothpick to poke 4 holes along both sides of the cookie and 2 holes in front for eyes. (Sticking licorice in just cracks the chocolate.)
  • Stick one short piece of licorice into each marshmallow.
  • Stick the other end of licorice into eye holes.
  • Stick the long pieces of licorice into the sides of the cookie for legs.

Adjust leg length as you see fit. Can use toothpicks for holding eyes. (Hard to swallow this way though.)
